A Remarkable Month for the Yard - What a month it has been.

Since November, the yard has sent out 14 winners, February alone included two doubles, a five-time winner on the bounce, and several horses completing back-to-back victories. For a first season, it’s been nothing short of remarkable — and we are hoping the momentum shows no signs of slowing.

The latest headline came courtesy of Itsinthename, who continued our run of form with victory in the 1m7½f maiden hurdle. It was his fourth win from the yard’s last six runners and our 14th winner since November. To see him battle on so gamely under Sean Bowen was hugely satisfying — particularly as it was his first start over hurdles.

The yard is currently operating at a 32% strike-rate this month, an extraordinary statistic and a real testament to the consistency of the horses. November was the only month since we started training not to surpass a 20% strike-rate — a level many established yards would be delighted with.

          As Nick reflected:

“I can only be grateful for how it’s all going. We’ve got a great team at home and fantastic facilities in Lambourn.

Behind every winner is an enormous team effort — from the staff at home who prepare the horses day in, day out, to the owners who place their trust in us. To achieve this level of success so early in our training journey is incredibly special, and we’re excited about what the coming months may bring.

The horses are thriving, the team is working tirelessly, and the future looks bright.

We enjoyed a couple of good runners over the weekend just gone, with Bollin’ Thou continuing his remarkable campaign to notch up a fourth win. He was expertly piloted by a hastily drafted Sean Bowen — proving that Nick provides taxi services for jockeys as well as turning out winning horses! Bollin’ Thou has really come into himself this season, and Sean now knows him exceptionally well, delivering another brilliant ride.

Overall, it’s been a very positive month for the yard. We’ve had plenty of runners hitting the frame, and we’re pleased with the progress the horses are making and the way they’re performing on the track. It’s great for owners to see that consistency paying off. From an admin point of view, many of the horses have now had their flu vaccinations, allowing us to kick on confidently into February.

At home, we have some lovely youngsters who are working well, and we’re very much looking forward to getting them out racing in the spring. On a more bittersweet note, we say goodbye to Josh Bryan, who is heading off to ride in France. Josh has been a big part of the team and has ridden our Racing Club horses with great success. We wish him the very best and look forward to welcoming him back in the future. We’ve also been pleased to welcome a couple of new faces to the yard — both equine and human.

Finally, our other stable star St Irene continues to go very well at home. Her next target is Cheltenham, likely the Thursday in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, and she won’t run again beforehand as we focus on getting her super fit for the day. It’s unbelievably exciting to be heading towards what would be our first runner at the Cheltenham Festival, all being well.

Plenty to look forward to in the weeks ahead.

There’s no better way to start the year than with winners — and Bollin’ Thou has gone one better by delivering a superb hattrick of wins, lighting up the yard and giving everyone involved plenty to smile about.

From his first success, it was clear he was in great heart, but to follow it up not once, but twice more, shows just how well he’s thriving. Each run has seen him grow in confidence, travelling strongly, jumping with fluency, and finding plenty when it matters most — the sort of horse every yard loves to have.

What makes this hattrick even more special is the teamwork behind it. From the daily care and preparation at home, to the planning of his races and the rides on the day, it’s been a true collective effort. Wins like these are always rewarding, but a sequence like this feels extra special.

Bollin’ Thou’s run of form has brought real brightness to the New Year, giving owners, staff, and supporters a huge lift. He’s clearly loving his racing, and as long as he continues to tell us he’s happy, we’ll enjoy every step of the journey with him.

What a way to round off the year — two wins in the last two days!

Yesterday, St Irene proved truly saintly, storming home to give us our first Listed winner, before Bollin Thou thundered past the post today to finish the year on a real high. What an end to 2025!

December itself has been full of highlights. Morning Mayhem kicked off our festive winning streak on the 19th, and we were delighted to see him get his head in front — made even better by the fact it coincided with the team’s Christmas party, which was celebrated in proper style.

On Boxing Day, we saddled two runners and were perhaps unlucky not to come away with two winners. That said, Queenie St Claire delivered the goods with a well-earned victory at Wincanton in what looked a competitive race.

We now turn our attention to the New Year, starting with D Day, who runs on the Flat at Chelmsford. We’re hopeful she can start 2026 on a positive note.

Otie’s Friend, who ran before Christmas at Huntingdon in a bumper, is currently for sale. He gave a stone to the winner when finishing second and is very much one to be excited about for the future. We think he’s a smart horse and would love to see him remain in the yard.

Racing Club membership remains open for anyone keen to be part of our journey. Both Club horses enjoyed a well-earned, restful Christmas and will begin picking up their work again in the early New Year.

Finally, it’s been a pleasure to reward the team with some winners over the festive period. Without their hard work — and the continued support of our owners, suppliers, friends, and family — none of this would be possible. We’re hugely grateful to everyone involved.

December proved to be a hugely exciting month for the yard, capped off in the most special way by St Irene, who delivered her second career win, the yard’s fourth winner, and — incredibly — our first Listed victory. A moment none of us will forget, and quite the Christmas present for everyone involved.

St Irene wasn’t the only one to get her head in front during a memorable festive period. Morning Mayhem crossed the line first at Uttoxeter, expertly piloted by Kielan Woods, kicking off a fantastic run of results. Queenie St Claire followed suit with a determined win at Wincanton under Freddie Keighley, before Bollin Thou rounded things off in style, storming home at Uttoxeter with Sean Bowen in the saddle.

To enjoy multiple winners in December — across different tracks, jockeys, and races — was incredibly rewarding and a real testament to the hard work of the team, the patience of our owners, and the quality of horses in the yard.

We promised we’d start with a bang — and St Irene delivered. She’s put us on the board in style with a second at Newbury and then a win at Wincanton on her first two runs for the yard (pictured above with her sister St Aurelia). A huge congratulations to her owners. She’s an exciting filly with a bright future, and we’re looking forward to seeing where she goes from here.

Nick is very pleased with how the first three weeks have gone. It’s still early days, but several of the older horses on the yard have already produced encouraging placings and are improving with each run, which is exactly what we hoped to see. As we move into December, keep an eye out for some of our younger horses who will soon be making their first appearances for us. We’re hopeful they’ll all make a good showing as they gain experience — and with a long season ahead, there’s plenty to look forward to.

Our two Racing Club horses, Summerleaze and Alan Bresil, continue to take positive steps forward with every run, showing improvement, consistency, and all the signs of an exciting season ahead. Members have already enjoyed a celebratory glass of bubbles at Taunton, thanks to Summerleaze’s excellent second under top weight — a lovely perk of being on course with placed horses. With Owners & Trainers badges currently readily available, it’s a fantastic time to be involved, making membership to the Nick Scholfield Racing Club the perfect Christmas gift for anyone who’d love to experience the thrill of racehorse ownership up close.

A huge thank you to our team, who’ve worked incredibly hard to get everything running smoothly, and to our owners for their ongoing support – without both, we simply wouldn’t be racing at all.

St Irene delivered. Only her second run for us, St Irene was our first runner and put us on the board in style with a second at Newbury and then a win at Wincanton on her first two runs for the yard.. A huge congratulations to her owners. She’s an exciting filly with a bright future, and we’re looking forward to seeing where she goes from here.

I’m thrilled to say we’ve sorted all the paperwork and red tape with the BHA, and my licence came through mid October.

One of the BHA’s rules is that horses have to be in a licensed yard for 14 clear days before they run, we can now start having runners and making plans for the horses.

We moved here in July, so I’ve essentially been training for four or so months, but it does feel a bit more real now. I can make entries and pencil in races in the programme book. I just pray all of the horses stay sound and we can kick on, all of the owners have been very supportive and there’s no pressure to run, well maybe only from myself!

It’s been a learning curve - more so the business side of things - and I’ve been to a few sales recently, which has been another good exercise. I haven’t managed to buy anything, I keep getting outbid, so we’re still on the lookout for horses, but I’m delighted with what I see each morning and I am excited about the next few months.

          Limbering Up

The horses are in good form at home and I’m happy with how they’ve trained, we haven’t been able to do much on the grass because of the ground. Lambourn has some superb facilities and it has rained a bit, but we just need more.

That said, we did manage to school some on the grass recently and that was really useful. Once the weather plays ball, we’ll be able to do more, but I must say a big thank you to Newbury, who let us take a few of the youngsters there this week to gallop after its flat season had finished. It was a big help and the ground was lovely. For horses, especially young ones, it’s great for them to have an awayday like that; they got on the lorry, it gets them thinking, gets their blood pumping and they get to see the racecourse - it’s just a good experience and I’m grateful to Newbury for allowing us to do it.

On the subject of exercising horses, I still ride out regularly. I’m obviously busier on the phone now than when I was a jockey, but we pull out for 6.30am most mornings, so I can get a few lots out before the phone starts ringing and I enjoy it. I like feeling how the horses are and think it’s useful to be up, close and personal with them. There’s a bit of wear and tear on the body and I’m a bit creaky, but while I’m still able to ride out, I will.

In terms of jockeys, I won’t necessarily be tied down to anyone, but Jack Quinlan will ride the majority and then it’s owners’ preference. I’ve known Jack a long time and rode against him and know all about his strengths. He’s a great rider and top guy, fingers crossed we can supply him with plenty of winners.

          Running Plans

One of the things I liked as a jockey was looking through the programme book and knowing what races were coming up and where horses could run. Obviously, it wasn’t my decision then, but it’s something I really enjoy doing now, so hopefully I get it right when it comes to placing them.

My first ever entry as a trainer was St Aurelia, who may be out in the next few days. She’s a four-year-old filly by Blue Bresil, who everyone knows is the sire of Constitution Hill, and she’s a half-sister to St Irene, who bolted up in a bumper first time out for Ben Brookhouse at Southwell last year. It will be her first day at school and she’s not run in a point-to-point, so you never know, but we like what we see and she does go nicely at home.

We’ve also got St Irene now and she’s entered as well, and is another I’m keen to see in action, but as with our other entries it’s about seeing what the ground and opposition is like, and also if some horses get in.

Our two Nick Scholfield Racing Club horses, Alan Bresil and Summerleaze, are entered in a few places too. Alan Bresil is a five-year-old gelding who has done nothing but please us since we bought him after his third in a point-to-point in March. That could prove a strong contest as the winner was bought by Paul Nicholls for £135,000. I adore Alan Bresil’s attitude and he’s going to be a staying chaser in time, but we’ll start small and build our way to that.

Summerleaze has more experience and recently joined us from Olly Murphy’s yard. She progressed nicely for Olly, winning three times, and stamina is her forte, while she’s largely consistent and should be an ideal horse for the racing club. When we do start having runners, it will give us a good guide to where we are at with the team, but we could just do with some more rain!

There is still space available to join the Nick Scholfield Racing Club, which we launched recently. As mentioned above, the two horses in it at present are Blue Bresil and Summerleaze, so hopefully they read the script and run well, but the club’s about much more than that and includes stable visits, Zoom calls, regular updates and much more all for a small price. Anyone thinking about joining the team should contact us for more details or just an informal chat.

Lambourn’s newest trainer is ready for the challenge.

The feeling in Lambourn is starting to change as the Flat season edges closer to its conclusion. Although there are plenty of valuable prizes still up for grabs over the next few weeks, we're seeing jumps trainers more and more in the Valley of the Racehorse now autumn is upon us.

Six-time champion trainer Nicky Henderson is fine-tuning his squad for the coming months on his own private gallops at his Seven Barrows base just outside the village, but the likes of Jamie Snowden, Warren Greatrex and Oliver Signy can all be spotted regularly on the communal Mandown gallops with the core jumps season approaching.

The village prides itself on the excellent Jockey Club-owned facilities, which include several schooling grounds at the summit of Mandown, and they will likely be in high demand with trainers from around Britain as well as Lambourn.

One trainer who is relishing the chance to experience the facilities is Nick Scholfield, the multiple Grade 1-winning jockey who is enjoying the next step of his career after retiring from the saddle after the Grand National in April.

Earlier in the summer, Scholfield acquired Felstead Court Stables on Folly Road - the former base of Amo Racing - and is hoping to send out his first runners in late October or early November.

“I’ve done all the courses that need to be done,” said Scholfield as we returned from seeing some of his string complete a canter up the Peter Walwyn Gallop.

“I wouldn’t have wanted it any sooner because a lot of my horses have come back from their summer breaks and they were never going to run before October anyway. Given the condition of the horses and the circumstances I’m in, it’s worked out quite well. It’s given us a chance to find our feet without the pressure of running any horses, so hopefully in the next couple of months we’ll have a clearer picture of where we’re at.”

Scholfield knows he’ll be competing against the likes of Paul Nicholls, Dan Skelton and his neighbours Snowden and Henderson, but he’s optimistic of a good run when he starts.

He said: “I’m fully aware it’ll be the hottest time of the year to start with other trainers, so it might be a slow-burning candle, but I’m confident that come the end of the year we can get some results with them. It might not be right away, but I’d be hoping they could win something between them.”

The yard has room for around 25 horses, and although it will not be at full capacity to begin with, Scholfield is hoping the ones he has in can fly the flag high. He named St Irene as one to follow, a five-year-old mare who won a bumper on her debut and has joined the yard from Ben Brookhouse.

He said: “The best races for St Irene are probably towards the backend of the season in the spring. Those will be her main aims, but she’s been a pleasure to deal with at home and she’s fitted well into our system.

“We have her half-sister, St Aurelia, who will probably run this side of Christmas in a bumper. We’ll have a few nice novice hurdlers as well as a few nicer older horses.

“We have eight three-year-olds, so they might take a bit of time. If they can get a run in before the end of the year then great, but we can look forward to next year with them. Hopefully we have these younger ones to help build us up for the future. They’re not just here for this season only, we’re trying to think beyond that.”

Transitioning from a jockey to a trainer was not always on the cards for Scholfield, who began his riding career with Nicholls and won the 2014 Fighting Fifth on Irving.

He said: “I was fully committed to riding, and becoming a trainer wasn’t something I was ever looking to do when I was in the saddle. I always enjoyed the placement of horses and where they could end up, so I’ve been interested in that, but only from a jockey's point of view.

“It was probably towards the latter part of my career when I thought about it more. I used to help my dad train point-to-pointers when I was younger, and I grew up with ponies, so it was probably always in my blood.

“Being a jump jockey is only half your life, as you’re lucky if you get to near the age of 40, so I’m quite fortunate to get the chance to do this.”

It is a bonus for Lambourn to have another jumps trainer in the village and Scholfield said it was a no-brainer to move to the area after seeing the facilities on offer.

He said: “It’s remarkable, and until people come here, they can’t appreciate how good everything is. They’re so well maintained, and Will Riggall and his team constantly make sure everyone is happy, no matter what time of year it may be.

“There are so many gallops that can suit five-furlong sprinters to four-mile chasers. Archie Watson won the sprint race at Royal Ascot, and Jamie Snowden won the Coral Gold Cup, so it just goes to show any type of horse can train here, as the results speak for themselves.

“Everyone within the Lambourn community has been so helpful and welcoming. They’ve been able to guide me and the team in the right direction, and it’s all very much appreciated.

“I have to thank the owners too because I’ve not yet had a runner and I’ve still managed to get their support. It’s massive, and I have to pinch myself sometimes as to how lucky I am to be here

Syndicates: The Smart Way to Join the Racing World

For many fans, full ownership of a racehorse can feel out of reach — but syndicates are changing that.

By sharing costs, risks, and rewards with like-minded enthusiasts, you can enjoy all the best parts of ownership without the heavy price tag.

Affordable Entry to a Premium Sport

Syndicates split the purchase and training costs among members. For a modest monthly contribution, you can own a share in a horse that might compete at prestigious meetings.

All the Fun, Less of the Stress

Your syndicate manager and trainer handle the admin, training, and logistics. You get the updates, the invitations to stable visits, and the owner’s badges on race days — but without the paperwork.

          Ready-Made Community

Joining a syndicate connects you with other racing fans. You’ll celebrate successes together, swap tips, and enjoy a social circle built around a shared passion.

          A Gateway to Full Ownership

Many people who start in syndicates go on to own horses outright. It’s a perfect way to learn the ropes, understand the costs, and experience the highs and lows before stepping up. For more information about ownership and syndicates,

For many, the next step is turning from spectator to owner — and discovering a whole new world of excitement, connection, and pride.

Owning a racehorse transforms a day at the races into something deeply personal. Suddenly, you’re not just cheering on a favourite number — you’re willing your own colours to cross the line first. The adrenaline surge is real, and so is the satisfaction when your horse runs well.

Ownership brings you closer to the sport. Stable visits, morning gallops, and direct contact with the trainer give you a glimpse of the hard work and dedication behind each performance. You’ll see your horse progress from training to the winner’s enclosure.

A racehorse can be a wonderful social hub. From naming your horse to celebrating at the track, ownership creates memorable experiences for family, friends, and business partners alike.

Wins are celebrated, setbacks endured, but each step deepens your bond with your horse and the sport. Even when your horse isn’t first past the post, the pride of watching them compete never fades.

Welcome to the first of my monthly newsletters from Felstead Court, where I am delighted to say we have settled in nicely since moving in July.

As everyone knows, I retired the day after I rode in the Grand National in April and training is something I’ve wanted to do for a while. We had a little pre-training yard near Bath before, but we were on the lookout for somewhere else and Felstead was perfect, so we’re lucky to be here.

As a jockey, you can just think about your next ride and not see the bigger picture, but the training side of things - how you could improve the horses, where to place them or what could you do differently - appealed to me, and I’m well and truly bitten by the bug now.

There are challenges, however, and that’s not necessarily down to the horses, although they obviously have problems themselves.

One of the things I’ve quickly learned about is running a business. We’ve not got that many horses so I can keep on top of a lot of the stuff myself and get a good understanding of things. It’s frightening at times, don’t get me wrong, but I think it’s important, almost as important as getting the horses fit and healthy, and winning races.

          Loving Lambourn

I’d spent a fair amount of time in Lambourn when I was a jockey, riding out for various trainers, so I know all about the village and what it has to offer, but I’m still constantly struck by how lucky trainers are here.

For a start, there are the gallops and facilities, which are great and are looked after and maintained by the Jockey Club, who do a superb job. Not having to think about harrowing a gallop is one less thing to worry about and - as a trainer - there are plenty of things to worry about!

Then anything you need is close to hand as well. The vets, farriers, tack shop are all on your doorstep, which just makes everything much easier and convenient. They call it the Valley of the Racehorse and I can really see why now.

Plenty of locals have popped in to say hello, which has been quite touching and we feel we can put down roots here.

The location is a plus too - you never feel you’re far from anywhere in Lambourn, although I can’t believe there aren’t more jumps trainers around, but that may be a plus for us.

          The team

When we moved in, we had ten horses and we’re up to 24 now, which is good, and I can’t wait to have the first runner. I’m still waiting to get my licence from the BHA, but hopefully it won’t be too long and the plan is to have our first runner in early November, and we’ll probably have ten to run in that month. Hopefully a few of the younger horses will then be ready to run around the turn of the year. I haven’t decided who will be the first runner; it’s just a case of looking for the right race for the right horse.

We’ve 37 boxes here and I’ve ambitions to fill them. That would be a nice manageable number to have and I’ve been involved in jump racing all of my life, so the core part of the business will be jumpers, but I’m minded to get involved in the flat if I can and have always had an interest in it.

          Aims

I want to be here for a long time, not a short time. I’m cautious about setting targets and fretting or stressing if we’re not meeting them, but at the same time we’re an ambitious outfit who want to make a name for ourselves. I rode a Grade 1 winner and a Cheltenham Festival winner as a jockey and if I achieve either of those as a trainer I’d be thrilled. Hopefully there is potential to do that among the string and we like plenty of them, but I’m well aware of the competition we’ll be up against.

          Be part of the team

We’re keen to get as many people as possible involved in the yard and one way to do that is by joining the Nick Scholfield Racing Club, which has just launched. We currently have Alan Bresil in the club, although we’re on the lookout for more horses and it costs just £250 plus vat for the year. It’s a fun, affordable way to have an interest and part of the package includes stable visits, Zoom calls, regular updates and all the other enjoyment owners experience for a small price, and I’m optimistic Alan Bresil can provide plenty of fun on the track along the way.

As the name suggests, he’s by Blue Bresil, the sire of the brilliant Constitution Hill, while there are plenty of winners in his family.

He ran in a point-to-point in March and finished a close third. It could prove quite a strong contest as the winner, Karaka De Thaix, was subsequently bought by Paul Nicholls for £135,000, while March On Oxo, who was second, is well regarded as well.

Alan Bresil wasn’t beaten far that day and has done everything right. He’s a staying chaser of the future and will probably start off in staying novice hurdles. He’s very genuine, and we love him to bits; he’s a pleasure to deal with in every way. He’ll hopefully give people lots to smile about this season and he’s the ideal horse for a racing club, so get in touch if you fancy becoming involved.

          Thank you

Before I sign off, I’d just like to thank all of the owners and everyone else who has supported me these last few months. We haven’t even had a runner yet and I’ve still been sent horses so I’m desperate to repay that faith with some winners when we do get started. It’s a big ask for owners to send horses and it is appreciated.
