Ownership

How It Works
Ownership
There are several ways to own a racehorse:
Sole ownership – you own 100% of the horse and all prize .
Buying the Horse
You either:
- Purchase at a public auction (often with the trainer or bloodstock agent helping), or
- Buy privately from an owner or breeder, or
- Take a lease/share organised by a syndicate or trainer.
Registering Ownership
In the UK you register with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and Weatherbys. They handle colours, naming, fees and your official “owner account” for prize money.
- You’ll choose your racing colours (silks).
- You’ll pay a small annual owner registration fee.
Training and Costs
Your horse is placed with Nick Scholfield your licensed trainer. You pay a monthly training fee which covers:
- Stabling, feeding, and exercise.
- Staff, vets, farriers and transport.
Communication & Involvement
- Regular updates from the trainer (videos, emails, calls).
- Invitations to watch morning gallops at the yard.
- Owners’ badges and access to the parade ring and hospitality on race days.
Prize Money & Sales
When your horse runs, prize money is paid into your Weatherbys account, minus deductions (jockey, trainer, stable staff, BHA levy). If the horse is later sold, proceeds are split according to ownership shares.
The Experience
You’re not just paying for a chance at prize money; you’re buying access, excitement and involvement. Stable visits, naming, choosing targets and celebrating wins are all part of the fun.
Feel the Buzz or Race Day Every Month
As an owner you’ll receive trainer video updates after key gallops and races, together with regular progress notes and entry information so you’re always up to date with your horse’s plans. You’ll have open access to the yard on work mornings to meet the team, watch your horse on the gallops and enjoy private stable tours. Owners’ badges for your horse’s race days ensure you’re right at the heart of the action, with racetrack hospitality options arranged at preferential rates. All your photos, replays and form summaries are stored in one simple owner’s hub, and you’ll also be invited to special open days and parade events, along with enjoying partner perks from merchandise to feed suppliers and local hotels.
